Lead Annual Essay Competition for Students in Developing Countries, 2017

Lex:lead is pleased to announce scholarship competition in developing countries. Up to 10 US$500 awards made in February 2017 to the top essays answering this year’s essay question: “How do refugee and migration law affect poverty and economic development? How can it be implemented to reduce poverty and to improve economic development?”

Eligibility:
Applicants must register by 31 October 2016 online at www.lex-lead.org. Applicants meeting the eligibility criteria will be assigned a registration number (an Identification Number) which they are to use with no other identifying information in essays submitted by 31 December 2016.

Essays:
Essays must be in English, typed and single-spaced for a total of not more than five (5) pages. All work submitted must be the applicant’s own, original work with clear attribution where other sources are consulted. Essays must be submitted using the Identification Number assigned at registration and contain no information that could lead to the independent identification of the applicant. Essays must be submitted using the email address provided at registration by the candidate to contact-at-lex-lead.org by 31 December 2016. Further details are given over page.

Award :
Essays submitted by the deadline will be independently assessed by judges from a panel of experts and awards announced in February 2017. Note that award cheques are made out to the applicant’s

University of British Columbia Donald Wehrung International Student Award in Canada for Undergraduate Students

The Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award recognizes outstanding international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas, who have achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances and who would be unable to pursue post-secondary education without financial assistance.

Eligibility
Nominations will be accepted from secondary schools, recognized international development agencies and their affiliates, registered local or international charitable and not-for-profit organizations.
A school or organization may nominate one student for UBC’s Donald Wehrung International Student Award for undergraduate study at UBC’s Vancouver or Okanagan campus.

To be eligible for consideration for the Donald Wehrung International Student Award, the nominee must be:

- an international student, who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, and who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit (visa)
- from a war-torn or politically unstable region of the world, and/or from an economically disadvantaged region of the world, and has achieved academic excellence under difficult circumstances, with no financial means from family or other sources to pursue post-secondary education, either in their own country because it is unavailable or unattainable, or outside their country because it is beyond their means
- graduating or recently graduated from a recognized senior secondary school; applying for their first undergraduate degree;
- able to demonstrate superior academic achievement (at least an ‘A’ average or equivalent standard) and leadership potential

If a school nominates one student for the Donald Wehrung International Student Award, a non-profit organization may NOT nominate another student from that same school for this award.

Utrecht University Netherlands Excellence Scholarships for International Undergraduate and Graduate Students

The funds for the scholarships come from the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship Fund, established by Utrecht University and from contributions by Utrecht University alumni. The scholarship programme is highly selective. Only candidates showing the highest achievement and promise may receive a scholarship. Applications for the 2017-2018 academic year will open in November 2016.

Scholarship benefits
Selected students are awarded a scholarship that covers the maximum tuition feeand €11 000 living expenses per year. However, students should be aware that the grant is not necessarily a full scholarship, and that it may be necessary to find additional funding to be able to finance study and stay completely.

As one of the requirements for being granted a residence permit in the Netherlands, students from abroad must prove to the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Office) that they have sufficient financial means.

University of Newcastle International Graduate Research Scholarships in Australia for Masters and PhD Students. The University of Newcastle International Postgraduate Research Scholarships(UNIPRS) supports new students from any country of the world intending to pursue a Master’s degree or PhD degree by research at UoN.

Eligibility
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements before the closing date and must have an offer of admission to a research higher degree.

Applicants for all schemes must have completed at least four years of undergraduate study and have attained Honours Class 1 or equivalent.
Applicants must provide evidence of English proficiency before the closing date. The TOEFL computer based test requires a score of at least 232 (with an Essay Rating of at least 4.5) or a paper based test score of at least 575 (with an Essay Rating of at least 4.5); or an IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no individual subtest score less than 6.0.
